Hieropolis

Hieropolis is a very large Roman city just above the springs of Pamukkale, whose existence was based largely upon the healing elements of the hot springs as well as an oracle akin to the one  at Delphi.   The first picture above is of a hot spring channel that had built up over the years with minerals deposited by the springs.  At this location the white travertine build up you can see in the Pamukkale post are no longer present. See the post on Pamukkale to get an idea of what the travertine and springs look like. There is a pool nearby the theater in which (for a fee) you can swim amongst submerged ancient columns.  We looked at it and found it a bit tacky.  To console ourselves we grabbed ice cream cones at the snack bar.
