Did I mention earlier about our first Efes brand beer that I ordered on the boat back in Istanbul? Ick we thought, Turkey's version of Coors. After 9 or so days of the heat, we now say yum!
A little tour of the City this morning, followed by a visit to the magnificent archaeological museum.
We were dragging at the museum, so towards the end we went to the café for a Turkish coffee. We didn't like it better than last time we had it. After that Cathy kindly let me have our way for lunch...so we headed to doner kebab row. Got tired real quick of the hucksters trying to pull us in to their restaurant because theirs was the best and they had air conditioning. After running the gauntlet and deciding they all looked about the same, we chose one and I finally had my doner. Wasn't as good as I remember what we had in Florence.
After that we left the tourist quarter, wanting to explore the real part of the city. As luck would have it we found the weekly market and it was blocks and blocks and blocks and blocks long. I have no doubt that even as many streets we walked we didn't see it all. And the prices were cheap. I bought grapes at 50 cents a pound. Tomatoes were practically free. We were wondering how all that fresh produce and fish were going to be sold all in one day. Cathy also bought some bananas, nuts, and handcrafts.
And to wrap up the day we found a pleasant restaurant in old town. I ordered a mixed grill (not exactly knowing what that consisted of) and Cathy ordered a spicy chicken shish kebab. Well, they brought the former to the table but not the latter. The mixed grill included two kinds of every meat, grilled tomatoes, grilled peppers and rice and it alone stuffed us. We were worried, how would we ever be able to eat the other dish. Fortunately it had fallen through the cracks, never got made or served and we were off the hook. The restraurant provided us we free fruit dish to apologize for the mistake, for which there was no need, but we ate anyway. Did I mention there were two lovely guitarists and one vocalist performing throughout? And three cats circling our table waiting for something to "accidentally" fall from the table?
